I study galaxies, in particular gas, \u201cmetals\u201d (that\u2019s how we call all the chemical elements in the Universe that are heavier than helium) and dust in nearby and distant galaxies using background sources, such as stars, quasars, or gamma-ray bursts, to shine through them. I investigate the chemical properties of gas inside and around galaxies to learn about the chemical evolution of galaxies and the Universe. Between 2020 and 2024 I was a professor at the University of Geneva, having been awarded a\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.snf.ch\/en\/researchinFocus\/newsroom\/Pages\/news-190903-prima-the-road-to-a-professorship.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">PRIMA<\/a>\u00a0grant by the Swiss National Science Foundation to build the\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/annalisadecia.com\/site\/projects\/interstellar-one\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"25\">INTERSTELLAR ONE<\/a> research group.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hello, My name is Annalisa De Cia, and I\u2019m an astronomer at the European Southern Observatory (ESO) in Garching, Germany.
